Resolute

Adjective: Admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.
Synonyms: determined - firm - decided - resolved - decisive
Is it just me or has the notion of a New Year’s Resolution lost its strength?
Has it become somewhat of a joke, or perhaps an excuse to NOT accomplish something?
The root of the word “resolution” is “resolute.” Resolute
implies great strength, determination, perseverance and steadfastness. Examples
include the founders of our country who were resolute in the declaration of
our independence from British rule. Abraham Lincoln was resolute in keeping
the north and south together. Lewis and Clarke were resolute in finding a passage
to the Pacific Ocean.
Resolutions seem to have become vague, almost whimpy and non-quantifiable objectives
spewed forth with good intentions, but no plan or concrete steps laid out to
achieve them.
For instance, I desire to lose 15 pounds, to run a faster mile, to read more
often and be nicer to my kids.
It may behoove us to call a spade a spade and change the name to New Year’s
Desires.
Or should we revisit the root word — resolute — and apply it to
our life in an appropriate way.
Resolute. Unwavering in our determination to achieve. Letting nothing stand
in our way. Determined to conquer our objective come hell or high water.
We can do this by setting solid, realistic and achievable goals. Write them
down. Create a plan for achieving them, including actual steps and timelines.
Announce them to friends and loved ones and ask them to hold you accountable.
Keep a journal of your efforts and let nothing stand in your way.
If you’ve set ambitious goals, it won’t be easy. You will encounter
obstacles, challenges and roadblocks.
But you will succeed because you are resolute. You will improvise, overcome,
adapt.
One day at a time. Keep your objective in front of you — and as you march
onward, upward, toward the peak of your hill, you will notice some changes taking
place.
Your desires will materialize right before your eyes. You will be eating better.
Your clothes will be getting baggy. You will be smiling more, enjoying time
with your kids... all because you became resolute.
Now, what will you be resolute to accomplish this year?
